Philip White: Solo electronics
Infrequent Seams 2014

Documents is a work for solo electronics based on data extracted from five recordings:

Rainy Night in Georgia: Brook Benton
Flashlight: Parliament
Flamenco Sketches: Miles Davis
A Night in Tunisia: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
Slip Away: Clarence Carter

Documents is a piece about intuition and the recursive influences inherent in memory. When I was 18, each of these recordings worked its way into my psyche in a way that comes out every time I perform, compose, or listen to music.

I subject each recording to a unique process through which I derive musical information (harmonic, melodic, timbral, rhythmic, formal, etc). That information drives a set of voltage controlled amplifiers tied into a non-linear feedback system, influencing the behavior of the system and leaving a shadow of the original work. Documents is an attempt to reveal and subvert the influence of assumptions/intuitions in music making.
